Lore Luminaria #1 - The Eternal Ones & Introducing a Coven

A deep-dive into the lore of Witchspire.

Warmest of welcomes to our very first Lore Luminaria! This is a series of deep-dives into the world of Witchspire. We held a poll on the Witchspire Discord recently to select the topic of today, with Deities being victorious.

Before we dive into these mythical beings, allow me to set the stage.

Darkness birthed the Stars.

The Stars formed Starhaven, the endless reach that surrounds all worlds.

From Starhaven, the Starkin emerged. Playfully travelling across impossible distances.

And then came the worlds beyond counting.

The belief in powerful, mystical beings, stretches as far back as time itself. First recorded in cave paintings and other simplistic forms of writing. It would seem that most sentient beings feel a deep connection to the notion of something bigger.

“Cloudpainters. Starweavers. We know them by many names, though their appearance eludes us. With each deliberate stroke of the Brush of the Cosmos, they conjure worlds uncounted.” - Malphasius Balam, founder of The Tomekeepers.

It's a common practice to preserve the name of a deity in any form of writing, to ensure that they may survive our brief mortal memories, and live for eternity. Some of these deities appear to transcend worlds and cultures. With their names repeated across surprising distances, between seemingly unrelated peoples. They are known as The Eternal Ones, of which there are three whose names are revered above all others.

Protector of Mortals. Bringer of Life.

Vyr, also known as Vyyrh, is one of the Eternal Three, who is seen as a benefactor of all mortal beings. Shielding them from what lies beyond.

It is Vyr who raises the suns of all worlds during the day. And the moons at night. It is Vyr who allows crops to grow, and blood to flow. Our eyes open because Vyr wills it, and shall one day close, because Vyr wills it.

Vyr is commonly worshipped through the construction of monuments, often in stone or other materials that may stand the test of time.

To serve Vyr well, is to do great things in the physical realm. Ambition, perseverance and fortitude, all serve as keys to Vyr's blessing.

Keeper of the Stars, and Shepherd of Spirits.

Om is one of the Eternal Three, who holds dominion over Starhaven, the limitless reach that stretches throughout all worlds.

It is believed that when our Starkin return to the stars, we must first answer to Om, who determines the laws of all spirits. It is Om who decides our worth, and whether we may once again inhabit a physical form.

Om is worshipped through rituals, and is believed to occasionally answer a prayer to allow a spirit to linger a little longer before travelling back to Starhaven.

The Aspect of Time. The Ruthless One. The One Who Never Knocks.

Tol is one of the Eternal Three, known as the one who unravels.

Followers of Tol believe that the tears of time will one day run dry. Revering the time we're given, both in life, and in spirit, until the moment where Starhaven itself ceases to flow, as all is returned to darkness.

Tol transcends all realms and all forms. Any vision of Tol is considered an ill omen, a warning that our time has come to an end.

Worshippers of Tol practice sacrifice. The greater the offering, the greater the blessing. Many believe that Tol is pleased only when great risks are taken - regardless of the outcome.

It was these three who are believed to have birthed Magick into existence. A tale for another time.

Introducing a Coven: The Nightscribes

Choosing a Coven is a critical decision for any Witch - one that is made for life. Thornveil Academy offers six choices; one of which is The Nightscribes.

Founded by Principal Celesti Nov’aar during the Age of Rediscovery, the Nightscribes are a highly revered Coven. Mysterious and ambitious, the Nightscribes are attuned to the stars and the darkness of night.

“When the Starhaven speaks, we listen.”

Elemental Affinity: Astral

Colours: Golden Glow, Rose, Deep Blue

Q&A:

Q: Do The Nightscribes - and Covens in general - have their own “signature magic” or something similar? - The Ace of Rogues @ Witchspire Discord

A: Choosing a Coven will grant you special starting equipment and a permanent coven specific passive bonus. These passives offer you a boost to certain playstyles. We’ll dive deeper into this in a future post. It’s important to emphasize though, that Covens are not “Classes”.

You’ll have plenty of freedom to experiment with different elements of magic in the game.

Q: At what point in the game do you choose your coven? Can I change my mind later?

A: A coven is chosen when creating a character and cannot be changed unless you create an additional character - choose wisely!

Q: Should my whole crew choose the same Coven?

A: You absolutely can if you want to, but choosing a variety of Covens may help bring a variety of bonuses to your crew - though few things are cooler than a crew of Cloudpiercers with matching outfits 😎
